Farmers' Markets

Eligibility

Definition: A farmers' market is a public market place where fresh foods from a defined local area are sold by the people who have grown, gathered, raised, or caught them.

***Farmers' Markets must apply for NMFMA by May 1 of each year to have their information printed in educational brochures and other important print media.


Requirements:

  1. Operate in accordance with all relevant federal, state and local regulations

  2. Have a mission, rules and actions that are consistent with the Purposes of the New Mexico Farmers' Marketing Association, as listed in the By-Laws

  3. Not seek to erode the viability of other markets in the region, but rather collaborate with these neighboring markets

  4. Farmers and ranchers should be involved in the decision-making process of the market

  5. When crafts and other items are sold, markets should not allow the total number of craft and food processor vendors to exceed the total number of farmers and ranchers

  6. Member markets are prohibited from allowing the resale of agricultural products. Reselling is defined as agricultural products purchased by market vendors for resale to market customers. Agricultural products may be sold by a farm representative. A farm representative is a party that has the authority to act for the farmer so as to bring the farmer's agricultural product to market.

  • Free participation in market development programs such as economic impact studies (SEED), customer surveys and other periodic programs

  • Technical assistance with market programs such as SNAP, WIC and Senior Nutrition Programs

  • Participation in health-related nutrition programs such as the NM Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Program and Double Value Coupon Program (as program grant funding allows)

  • Qualify to receive Second Year Market Grant

  • Qualify for Advertising/Promotion Funds

  • Qualify to receive affordable liability insurance

  • Use of the NMFMA logo in advertising and promotional products


Annual Dues

Dues for farmers' markets are based on the average number of peak season vendors, including growers, food processors and farm craft vendors.

0-9 vendors = $10
10-19 vendors = $25
20-29 vendors = $50
30- 39 vendors = $50
40+ vendors = $100
